"We were seven under par. I think 10 won it," said Frankie Avalon, after a long enduring day at the Sheraton Desert Inn golf course, at the first Planet Hollywood Casino Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament. Other celebrities in attendance included Tom Arnold, Steven Stills, Vince Neil, and Richard Dreyfuss, among many others. LPGA Pro Tracy Kerdyk took home the trophy. Avalon will return to Las Vegas on December the 29th, 30th, and ring in the new year when he takes center stage at the Crystal Room, at the Sheraton Desert Inn Country Club.
Sly Stallone, the founding partner of Planet Hollywood, and Peter Boynton, President of Caesar's World and the Sheraton Desert Inn were on hand to present a check to Jeff Bridges, benifitting the End Hunger organization, for $50,000. Stallone's speech was brief, and to the point. "I'd like to thank all of the personalities that put this together, and the performing personalities from the sports world, and (laughs) from foreign worlds that come here today. Hopefully we're going to have a good time. This was put together quite quickly, but hopefully, we're gonna make this an annual event. Pretty soon, in the next two years, there'll be a hotel on our property, a gambling casino, and a Planet Hollywood auditorium." said Stallone. Incidentally, Stallone's handicap is approximately a 10. His overall team score was 60.12, with Michelle McCaan, Neal Elattrache, and Robert Bowlman.
Mike Connors, TV's "Mannix", one of the celebrities who played some golf at the celebrity tournament says he remembers coming to Las Vegas when Bugsy Segal built the Flamingo Hotel. "It's incredible, what's happened in Las Vegas. I've been coming here for years. The weather is ideal, the location is terrific, and if I was a little younger, I'd probably build a movie studio here." I asked Connors about the popularity and technology of making films today that deal with action and violence, as opposed to old classic films. "The technology today," he says, "makes filming very easy. In the old days, we had to do a lot of bad stuff, physically." He added, "As far as classic films are concerned. There's a new channel out called 'TV Land', which is showing classics of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. They're bringing back 'The Ed Sullivan Show', and my show 'Mannix', and shows like 'Dragnet'." Connor's team, which consisted of Pat Bradley, Richard Dreyfuss, and Bob Gustani, had an overall score of 59.98.
Alice Cooper, rock legend extraordinaire, said he enjoys any fundraiser which helps kids. "Anytime you can play golf, and raise money to feed the hungry, and take care of kids, is totally fulfilling. That's where my soft spot is, in my heart." Cooper, a 6 handicap, resides in Scottsdale, AZ, and is enjoying the success of his vintage rock hits. "People from the 70s and 60s have grown up now, and they're lawyers and doctors. They can afford to go to the big concerts.," Cooper said.
Two new hot-spots in Las Vegas include the Main Street Station Hotel and Casino. The Boyd Group, which also owns the California, the Fremont, The Stardust, and Sam's Town, opened it's doors to the public on Friday the 22nd. Unlike the old version of Main Street, the Boyd Group went all-out, spending $40 million refurbishing the property. One of the nicest additions to the Main Street Station is the Garden Court Buffet. Set in a courtyard setting, it is the largest buffet in downtown Las Vegas.
While dining, don't be surprised if you're entertained by the Shakin' Bacon Club, 3 funny gentleman who play music on containers with cooking utensils. For those of you that have been to all of the buffets, I strongly suggest that you check out the quality of the food prepared here. One of my favorite entrees is collard greens, and strawberry chicken. Their breakfast is served from 7 am - 10:30 am, for $4.95. Lunch is 11 am - 3 pm, at a very reasonable $6.95 and dinner is from 4 pm - 10 pm and is $8.95 most nights. Monday is Luau night, 4-11 pm, and Friday is seafood buffet, 7-11 pm and those special nights are $12.95. After a deliteful dinner, check out Main Street's Triple 7 Brew Club. There you'll see the Brewsky'son dueling pianos..
