JASON ALEXANDER LAMPOONS SELF-HELP GURUS IN ONE MAN SHOW AT PLANET HOLLYWOOD Written By: Benjamin B. Childs

Jason Alexander aka George Costanza performs a one man comedy act at Planet Hollywood through March 14. The audience is part of the Donny Clay Experience motivational seminar. Donny Clay has The Way. He just wants you to know you, to let the you inside of you out of you. You’re perfect just the way you are, no matter how lousy that is, and since you’ve obviously hit bottom by paying good money to get into his show in a desperate, last ditch effort to improve your life, he’ll help you.

Ever since Donny was a little boy, he’s been gifted with The Answer. To almost every question. Can’t stand your kids, other relatives, job, boss, neighbor? Get a gun. Hate your wife? Get a divorce. Here are four words to guide you in making more money. Get-a-second-job.
Worried about your health? Diet and exercise. For diet, Donny employs a string diet. This involves tying a string to everything you eat, then pulling it our of your mouth before you can eat it. Exercise? Try, um, exercising with yourself, if you know what I mean, to a healthier, happier you.
Commitment? You don’t even want to know.
Discomfort is good. Especially when Donny is wearing a flesh colored body suit with a codpiece. And extolling the virtues of remaining together using an old married couple from the audience.
With answers like these, who needs Dr. Phil, Tony Robbins, Oprah or Richard Simmons? Obviously not the celebrities like Ray Romano and Kirk Douglas, whose negative endorsements described how knowing Donny showed them what not to do and motivated them to do anything to get rid of him.
The concept for the show originated from a short lived sitcom that Alexander had called Bob Patterson about the life of a motivational speaker. He just took the show and incorporated an actual training session into the script.
The audience laughed through the entire show. And learned something about themselves.

Former Warner Bros. Executive TED JOSEPH Named President of Vegas-based Indie Label OD

FORMER WARNER BROS. EXEC TED JOSEPH

TAKES THE REINS OF LAS VEGAS BASED

INDIE LABEL ODDS ON RECORDS,

WHOSE ROSTER INCLUDES FAMED

POP DUO AIR SUPPLY AND L.A. BASED

ELECTRONIC-POP BAND ULTRAVIOLET SOUND

During Joseph’s 21 Years At Warner Bros. Records,

The Multi-Faceted Executive Worked With Legendary

Artists Madonna, Fleetwood Mac, Prince, Rod Stewart,

George Benson, David Sanborn and Al Jarreau

In the nearly 35 years since Ted Joseph began his incredibly diverse 21-year-stint at Warner Bros. Records, the industry has evolved from a corporate-centered culture to a new digital age where indie labels and DIY bands thrive.

While many of the top executives he has worked with over the years have shifted gears as casualties of the endless changes, the multi-faceted behind the scenes force is not only surviving, but thriving in the current environment. After several years as a consultant in the realm of “virtual labels,” the Detroit-bred executive brings his vast wealth of experience and expertise to his new role as President of the Las Vegas based independent label Odds On Records.

Joseph began his association with the label as a consultant to help the company get up and running and is now at the helm of a growing label whose roster includes legendary (and still massively globally popular) duo Air Supply and L.A. based electronic pop band Ultraviolet Sound, whose lead singer, onetime EMI artist Sarah Hudson, is the cousin of actress Kate Hudson.

After years in the multi-tiered corporate environment, Joseph is thrilled to run a smaller company where he can play a direct role in the careers of his artists. Odds On, which has global distribution via E1 Entertainment (formerly Koch Entertainment), is gearing up for new releases by both artists. Mumbo Jumbo, due May 4, is Air Supply’s first studio recording of all original material since 2002; its lead single, the infectious pop rocker “Dance With Me,” hit Adult Contemporary radio in March. Ultraviolet Sound’s debut single “Suck My Kiss” will be shipped to radio in June, two months before the band’s self-titled debut is set to drop.

Several of the tracks of Mumbo Jumbo were recorded at Odds On Recording (www.oddsonrecording.com), the state of the art studio owned by the label’s owners. Run separately from the label, the facility has hosted hip-hop/rap superstar Akon, rapper T.I., Smash Mouth lead singer Steve Harwell, pop/rocker Huey Lewis and Alicia Keys’ engineer Ann Mincelli.

These unique artists join numerous legends on Joseph’s rich resume. Over the years, working in both New York and Los Angeles, Joseph worked in numerous departments at Warner Bros., including marketing, sales, radio promotion and distribution. Among others, he dealt with everyone from Madonna, Fleetwood Mac, Prince and Rod Stewart to jazz and R&B greats George Benson, David Sanborn and Al Jarreau.

“I’m excited that I am able to bring to Odds On my many years of corporate experience and my recent work as a consultant for indie labels,” says Joseph, who launched his career as a merchandiser in his native Detroit. “I’m pleased to say that I have been able to successfully make the transition from the old music business model to today’s very different world. Many independents these days don’t have the budget or desire to do much more than send their bands on the road and hope they generate interest. But I believe in hiring the best in the business to help us market our artists and promote them at radio and retail.

“Odds On is also very active with internet marketing and social networking,” he adds. “We don’t plan to have a roster of 25 artists. We want to stay small so that we can give them the attention they deserve and not make them part of a cookie cutter production line operation. Our label is about melding together the ideas and strategies that made the old music business successful while bringing in exciting new technology and the opportunities available to us in the modern industry. Air Supply is a legendary group with a worldwide following of hundreds of thousands and global tours every year. Ultraviolet Sound is an L.A. band with a regional following. As you can see, we are open to artists at different stages of their careers…and also different genres of music!”

Wearing what he calls “all the hats” as President of Odds On Records, Joseph is thrilled about all aspects of running the label—from dealing directly with his artists (sans bureaucratic interference) to working hands on with the legal and manufacturing departments.

“All of these aspects present exciting challenges,” he says, “but for me at this point in my career, I’m really most interested in working with innovative, creative people and artists, employees and outside independent contractors of integrity. I especially love the idea of creating partnerships with the artists and being able, for the first time in my many years in the music business, to make the final decisions that can help the label thrive. To be successful, you have to be fiscally responsible and make sure your funds are being utilized 100 percent for maximum results. Our instincts are good and we’re excited about the future here at Odds On Records.”

Rosarito Beach Hotel and Condo Resort- A Haven For Celebrities and Families By Pete Allman

During my travels, I’ve always looked for resorts that had a story to tell, especially a historical one. I recently spent some time in Rosarita Beach Hotel, located 18 miles south of Tijuana Mexico. The resort was built in 1924 by Don Manuel Barbachano, who was responsible for initiating telephone service and electricity to the community as well as the Tijuna Freeway System. It was a haven for Rita Hayworth, John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Gregory Peck, and Marilyn Monroe just to mention a few.Today, celebrities such as Tom Hallick formerly of ” The Young and Restless ” say, ” Rosarito Beach Hotel carries the historic culture of Mexico and the beauty and tranquility of a small town. It’s an easy drive and a quick getaway.” states Hallick. The resort has a new condominium tower, which has the latest technologies in condo living and are available for home ownership. This quaint and historical resort also plays host to corporate events and retreats, along with anniversaries. The chefs at Rosarito are famous for providing excellent brunches. You may want to inquire about their new restaurants and check out their new spa where their famous Aromatic Swedish massage is receiving rave reviews and all for $29.00.

There’s also plenty of activities such as wine tasting at various wineries, The Fox Studios where the Titanic was filmed, whale watching and paragliding. Abraham, the hotel’s activity director, schedules the tours. On a personal note, this reporter found the staff and the quality of service at Rosarito Hotel superb.I personally commend Mr Hugo Peon, the general manager for his hospitality and his vision in providing personalized service in a warm friendly environment. Singer Alori Joh Meets Brando Unauthorized Star

Alori Joh is a singer, songwriter and vibrant performer from Carson, CA.
Alori Joh, a recording artist and new face on the Hollywood scene, met with Damian Chapa star of “Brando Unauthorized,” to speak with him about her music. Ms. Joh’s music is being considered for scene selection in the movie “Brando Unauthorized.”

Chapa, known as the controversial producer and director of “Dark Crossing,” “Bobby Fischer Live” and “Polanski Unauthorized,” which airs on Time Warner nationally this month, had this to say about Ms. Joh. “It’s a pleasure to meet such a beautiful artist as Alori.”

Ms. Joh, who performs as a high energy artist, first became aware of Chapa’s work from such films as “Blood In Blood Out” and “El Padrino.” I think my music is diversified enough to fit in Chapa’s films, and I look forward to moving forward with Damian to help enhance his films with my music,” Ms. Joh said.

Look out for Alori Joh’s debut mixtape, “That Time of the Month” releasing this year.

Damian Chapa- Lives His Vision

It seems like yesterday when I sat down to talk with Damian Chapa about his upcoming film, “Brando Unauthorized.” It was a tranquil day with blue skies in Marina Del Rey, California where we were relaxing on his yacht. Chapa, looked up at the sky in wonderment of his over 50-film career and calmly said, ”This new film project Brando Unauthorized is possible through God. We’re making history with the greatest actor of our time,” Chapa said.

Chapa is an upfront individual and his accomplishments as a controversial filmmaker have garnered him world-wide respect from independent filmmakers. Prior to Chapa’s films “Blood In Blood Out,” where he starred as Meklo with Jesse Borrego, Benjamin Pratt and Enrique Castillo, and his film “Street Fighter,” with Raul Julia and Van Damme, Chapa decided early on in his acting career to control his destiny.

Chapa came from a broken household with immense suffering from the loss of a loved one and succeeded the restrictive powers ran throughout Hollywood. It wasn’t long before Chapa founded Amadeus Films where he produced, starred in and directed numbers of independent films. “Polanski Unauthorized,” (the story of Polish director and actor Roman Polanski), examines Polanski’s life in an empathetic way. Another includes “Bobby Fischer Live,” (which examines Bobby Fischer, the ‘world’s greatest chess player’ during his time), points out the family crisis Bobby faced during his childhood. Both films have garnered much attention from the media and movie goers throughout the world, but Chapa always knew he would become an actor.

One day, after school, while watching ”Last Tango,” starring Marlon Brando, Chapa decided he would devote himself to acting.

”After watching the Academy Award performance of Brando in Last Tango, I knew where my destiny was going,” Chapa said.

Dedicating many years to acting, producing and directing, Chapa lives his dream and is in production of the Marlon Brando story. “Brando Unauthorized” tells the story of a father who is torn between his busy life as an actor which leads him to neglect his son. It is a role few actors would choose. On the other hand, it fits Chapa’s character and very much relates to his life as someone who stands up for people’s rights.

Other films produced by Amadeus Films include: “Bad Cop” with David Carradine, “Shade of Pale” with Desislava Dimitrova and Gary Busey, “I.R.A.,” “Man Of Faith,” “V2-The Dark Hour,” “El Padrino,” “Mexican Gangster,” “Fuego” and “Death of Evil.”

Bangkok Cuisine – Super Fabulous

While visiting the Capitol in Carson City, and speaking to Brain Krolicki, the Lt Governor, I was recommended to visit Bangkok Cuisine. Located in Reno, at 5851 South Virginia Street this contemporary restaurant was established in 1998 with their first location at 55 Mt. Rose Street. Chris Lueamrung, the owner has family recipes created by his Mother Chinta Woodring, who is the executive chef for both restaurants.

My guest, Phil Nabors had never indulged in Thai cuisine, while I have partaken in their cuisine many times. However on this occasion I was thoroughly surprised at the design of the restaurant and it’s authentic Thai cuisine.

Upon entering the restaurant, Kathleen Brand, our hostess greeted us and Reni Hira, the bar manager shared some information about the menu.

Let’s start with the appetizers. Spring rolls[Po Piah Tod] are stuffed with ground chicken and shrimp, bean thread noodles, assorted vegetables, served with homemade sweet plum sauce. Two more appetizers included Papaya salad with shredded green papaya, tossed with tomatoes, green beans, ground peanuts and cooked shrimp, served with ground beef beef strips and sticky rice. Then there’s the Thai stuffed chicken wings with ground pork and shrimp, bean thread noodles, dried mushrooms, served with homemade chili sauce. Now that’s a great way to start your culinary journey.

Of course, Thai ice tea is the preferred drink for those who don’t drink and Singha is one of the top beers of Thailand, which is what Phil preferred. Our main entrees consisted of Duck curry with Thai eggplant, pineapples, tomatoes, bell peppers, basil leaves and a mild curry sauce mixed with coconut milk. Phil ordered the Panong Curry and Tom Yum soup with chicken. Depending on how hot you want to order your dish, it’s all tantalizing to the palate. With every detailed taken care of by Joe Borvonrattansak our waiter and Reni, the bar manager, there was just one final conclusion to our dining adventure, desert. We were brought a trio of coconut ice cream topped with plum seeds, sweet garbanzo beans and roasted peanuts and cream. Bangkok Cuisine is opened for lunch, 11am-4pm, and dinner from 11am-10pm and on Sundays 4pm-10pm. Happy hours are from 4pm-7pm and on Friday-Saturday 4pm-10pm. Mayweather Defends WBC Title Slick and Easy

Floyd ”Money” Mayweather 44-0-0,[26 KO’s] had no trouble whatsoever proving he’s still the best fighter on the boxing circuit, beating out Robert ”The Ghost” Guerrero, 32- 2-, [18ko’S] by a unanimous decision. He proved by defending his World Boxing Council Title in a 12 round Championship fight, held at the MGM Grand Garden on May 4TH, that his one year lay off didn’t slow his reflexes down at all. From the time Jimmy Lemon announced the fight, Mayweather looked the part and performed the part of a great champion. Every round showedMayweather as an elusive, yet quick fighter who could easily score with his lightning fast right and connect while he bobbed and weaved out of Guerrero’s punches. Robert Byrd, the referee during the course of this fight had no problem breaking up both fighters in the tie ups. Mayweather also showed that he could trade punches with Guerrero and also used his left jab effectively during the course of the fight.60% of the power punches were landed by Mayweather compared to Guerrero’s 19%.When asked about his training, Mayweather gave the credit to his Dad, Floyd Mayweather Sr. and his team. The Eight-Time, Five-Division World Champion is almost the highest paid athlete with his six fight deal with Showtime. Altogether with Pay per view revenues, he could go over 250 million dollars on this deal. That’s if the marketing is promoted right and he keeps his WBC Title.

The WBC Featherweight World Championship had Daniel DE Leon 45-5[35KO’s]lose his title to two division world champion Abner Mares 26-0-1[14KO’s] who is now the WBC Welterweight Champion of the World. Mares performed exceptionally well, and was clearly delivered the more accurate punches to Ponce de Leon, knocking him down twice with a right, then a left in round 2, continuing to score, until the 9Th round where he finished off DE Leon by way of technical knockout in 2:20 of round 10.

er, caught Love with a right at the end of round 6 and also knocked him down in 9th.Al Bernstein, one of the commentators for Showtime and his associates all thought Rosado won the fight, but the judges saw it differently.

A French Experience At Sofitel’s Cattle & Claw

Some of the most enjoyable moments in traveling to France are the people and the cuisine.

Visiting vineyards and quaint restaurants gives one a different experience on how to enjoy life.

Recently, I invited Theresa Lin, “the Julia Child of Chinese Cooking,” to dinner at “The Cattle & Claw,” located within the Sofitel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills. The Cattle & Claw is unique, in that it is attached to a cocktail area, which serves as a club.

The restaurant however is an open area where guests can watch chefs prepare their food dishes. In addition there is a herb garden in the patio, which gives a feeling of being in the countryside of Italy.

The Sofitel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills.

According to Audrey Claudin, the F and B Outlet Manager, the creation of Cattle & Claw is to provide a fun dining experience in a country type setting.

The patio, with the herb garden provides that experience. Cecile Sandral Lasborders, the Marketing and public relations manager, originally from Italy, mentioned that rather than creating a high-end French experience, the company wanted something different. They wanted everyone to have a fun dining experience, which is what Cattle & Claw is all about

Cecile Sandral Lasborders with Theresa Lin and Pete Allman

Culinary Journey

We first ordered a Lobster Bloody Mary, for Theresa, and I ordered a creative lemonade tropical drink.

Theresa ordered a Lobster Salad, which consisted of a spring mix, tomato, and champagne vinaigrette and I ordered tomato soup, with was prepared fresh. Quite a soothing taste.

Cattle and Claw Lobster

Theresa ordered the main entree, consisting of a 5 oz Angus burger, half lobster, truffle fries, and a salad. I ordered Salmon with vegetables. Just the right touch.

There are other types of fries which include sweet potato fries, and Truffle fries, along with a Chickpea buright rger, and lobster tacos.

Dessert

The Rum Baba, a sponge-cake flavored with rum was just enough to please our sweet tooth. The Tiramisu, prepared with mascarpone cream, cocoa powder served in a glass was also delightful.

Torre Lucerna Hotel – A Heavenly Retreat

While tourists are traveling along the coast of California, just an hour away from San Diego is Ensenada Mexico. The beaches, with the fresh ocean breezes are inspiring there for a peaceful vacation. Just as important though is the earth of its people, and the fact that tourism is growing, especially with the port business. Ensenada has the third largest port in the world, which is increasing the economy there. A short distance away is the Torre Lucerna Hotel, a Five star hotel built and designed by Hector Kabande and his brother Fernando. Mr. Kabande, who has seven hotels in Mexico, one in Tijuana, Mexicali, Ciudad Juarez, Culiacan, and Hermosillo, is a visionary who understands the importance of catering to families who want comfort, quality cuisine, and top quality suites.

Upon entering Torre Lucerna Hotel, there’s an open feeling, where one can sit anywhere in the lobby area, enjoy the wine and cheese bar, or listen to the classical sounds of a pianist.

The open area is somewhat like a living room environment, that opens to the ocean view and pool area. Within this area are two restaurants, Acueducto, and Pacific Riviera Grill. Both of these restaurants serve impeccable cuisine, and both are open to the ocean breeze though glass doors and windows. The Acueducto especially, serves a wonderful breakfast buffet where everything is prepared from scratch, including the jellies, cookies, and breads

Riviera Platillo

As with any five star resort, the suites have to be decorated in such a fashion that it compliments the furniture. All amenities are included in each of these hotel rooms, including robes when requested. The bedding for instance is like sleeping on a cloud, and the showers are with authentic tile floors, where the shower itself is like taking a shower in the rain, with a full square shower head that trickles like soothing rain drops upon guests.
